Scented Candles 101: What to Look For and Where to Place Them

Not all candles are created equal. Most supermarket candles smell like disappointment in a jar.

But a good candle, a properly made one, can change how a room feels for weeks. The difference is in three things: wax, fragrance, and wick. Get those right and you've got something worth burning.

The Wax

Soy wax is the standard for quality. It burns slower than paraffin, holds scent better, and doesn't fill your room with soot. Paraffin is basically refined crude oil. You can taste the difference in the air after a few hours in a closed room.

Natural soy also means fewer chemical particulates. Over time in a bedroom or lounge, that matters. Your walls stay clean. Your lungs don't feel weird.

The Fragrance

This is where people get confused. Cheap synthetic fragrances are terrible. They smell plasticky for five minutes then turn chemical. But high-quality fragrance compounds, whether synthetic or essential oil based, smell like something real. They develop on your skin and in a room. They don't assault you.

Good fragrances layer. You smell one note when you walk in, something different as you settle in. That takes skill and quality ingredients. Cheap synthetic nonsense just smells sharp and flat.

The Wick

It's the part most people ignore and it ruins everything. A cotton or wood wick that's the right thickness for your candle gives you an even burn. No tunnelling down the middle. No black smoke. A cheap wick wastes half your candle and makes the whole thing look dodgy.

Where They Actually Belong in Your Home

Bedrooms. Side table or dresser, away from windows. Draughts make candles flicker and burn unevenly. Light it 30 minutes before bed. The gentle flame helps you wind down.

Bathrooms. Edge of the bath or windowsill. Steam carries scent fast through the room so you need less burn time.

Living rooms. Center of the coffee table, away from foot traffic and air vents. Larger rooms need bigger candles. A three wick candle will scent a proper lounge.

Kitchens. This is the real test. A quality candle neutralises cooking smells without competing with them. Put it on a shelf or counter away from your stovetop. Not too close to where you're chopping.

Hallways. The entrance sets the tone for your whole house. People notice scent first. Make it count.

Cheap candles release particles as they burn. Paraffin especially. Over weeks in a closed room it adds up. Natural soy wax burns cleaner. No soot on your walls. No chemical residue in your lungs.
